How To Make Salt Dough
Making salt dough is extremely simple. Just follow the recipe and your ready to go.
Simply mix the ingredients listed below in a bowl until the mixture thickens. Remove the mixture from the bowl, knead and then flatten the dough just like you would if you were making sugar cookies.
For your Salt Dough Ornament Recipe you will need the following ingredients
2 cups plain flour
1/2 cup salt
3/4 cup warm water
A few drops of food coloring if you like
Next choose some holiday cookie cutters to create ornaments in your favorite holiday shapes. You can use a star, ghost, leaf, sled, heart or any one you like best. There are a wide variety of cookie cutters sold at your local store or you can find them online. Prices average $5 to $10 for sets ranging in number from 5 to 50 cookie cutters.
Once the salt dough is shaped, find a spot at the top of the ornament and using a drinking straw press to create a hole. You will need this hole to hang your salt dough decorations with yarn or ribbon. Do not make the hole too small because when heated and dried the holes tend to close slightly.
Set the decorations on a microwave-safe plate in the microwave and set the time for 1 to 4 minutes. Because microwaves vary greatly, it is important to stay close by and check the decorations at each 1-minute intervals.
Once they are completely cool, you can paint and embellish the decorations any way you like. You can paint the decorations holiday colors such as red and green or black and orange. You can use glitter or beads or any number of craft supplies. They are your creations, so make them unique and have fun.
