The traditional Luau party food ideas of roast pig and poi are not what you will find at most luaus unless you happen to be traveling in Hawaii. Some enthusiatic party givers do dig a pit and roast a pig in the traditional underground Imu pit.
At a traditional Hawaiian feast, an imu pit is dug, and rocks are placed inside. Wood is added to the pit and set on fire. When the fire goes out a layer of large leaves are put on top of the rocks. Wire is sometime put in too, and the pig is put on top of it. It is all covered in more green foliage. Sometime weighted wet bags of sand are put on top of this and then the entire pit is covered in dirt. The pig roasting has begun, and it will take anywhere from 8 to 10 hours.
Now you see why most people don't do it! Luau party ideas do not have to be that complicated! It can be fun using your barbeque grill to make your food.
Grill some pork chops, serve some meat kabobs, both burgers and hot dogs are all acceptable luau fare here. Roast vegtables, dips and chips and finally a tropical fruit dessert. Maybe Mom will get industrious and make a pineapple upside down cake!
